What Is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum refining... it's derived from crude oil. It's been the dominant candle wax for over a century because it's inexpensive and easy to work with. However, when burned, paraffin releases petro-carbon soot and a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. If you've ever noticed black marks on the walls or ceiling near a candle, paraffin is usually the culprit.

What Is Soy Wax?

Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil, a natural, renewable resource. It was developed in the early 1990s as a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to paraffin. Soy wax burns cooler and slower than paraffin, which means your candle lasts longer and releases fragrance more gently and evenly throughout the room.

Soy vs Paraffin: Key Differences

Burn Time

Soy wax burns at a lower temperature, which means it melts more slowly. A soy candle will typically burn 30–50% longer than a paraffin candle of the same size. That means better value over time, even if the upfront cost is slightly higher.

Scent Throw

Paraffin candles are known for a strong "hot throw" (scent when burning), but soy candles offer a more consistent, nuanced fragrance experience, both cold and hot. Because soy wax holds fragrance oil well and releases it gradually, the scent tends to feel more natural and less synthetic.

Clean Burning

Soy wax produces significantly less soot than paraffin. This is better for your indoor air quality, your walls, and your lungs.. particularly important if you burn candles regularly or have children or pets at home.

Sustainability

Soy is a renewable, biodegradable resource. Paraffin is a fossil fuel by-product. If environmental impact matters to you, soy is the clear choice.

Appearance

Soy wax has a naturally creamy, matte finish. You may occasionally notice "frosting" (a white crystalline layer on the surface) this is a completely natural characteristic of pure soy wax and is actually a sign of quality. Paraffin candles tend to have a smoother, glossier appearance.
